Teaching a new learner to drive is a huge responsibility. Not only is the trainer providing learners with the technical skills to operate a vehicle, they are also ensuring the learner is P Plate ready and can safely drive on public roads alongside many other people.
The licencing of Accredited Driver Trainers is handled in Queensland by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, and they have a clear set of criteria each trainer must meet before being accredited.
So why is that information important, and why do you need to know?
Well, put simply it’s important that anyone advertising themselves as an accredited driver trainer has the skills, qualifications and experience to do the job, and successfully train you to pass your driving test and become a safe road user. Ultimately, lives depend on it!
To become an accredited driver trainer applicants need the following:
As a separate and equally important issue, any vehicles used by an accredited driver trainer to provide pre-licence driver training must comply with minimum standards outlined in legislation. (Ref S29 Transport Operations (Road Use Management – Accreditation and Other Provisions) Regulation 2015)
Simply deciding to become an accredited driver trainer is one thing but being appropriately skilled and experienced is another. It’s a long process for people like Learn2Drive Driving School principal Tracey Wilson to receive their accreditation, and that should provide you with the confidence that you’re in safe hands.
